Biting is an illustration of an anxious habit. It personifies a feeling and highlights the symptom when emotionally heightened. The up-close imagery confronts the viewers - they must deal with the image presented to them. The exaggeration of colors increases the emotional effect and heightens the movement.
The brush work of this piece uses short feathered marks that mimic meditative, repetitive movements such as yoga, prayer beads, or worry stones to exemplify anxious or painful situations. The loose and wild brushwork create chaos and disorganization - a reflection of the internal struggle.
